ESL I AND II – COMPOSITION FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS LEVEL 1: INTRODUCING THE SHORT STORY (ESS81 & ESS82)

This course is designed to support our bilingual and ESL population. For bilingual/beginning ESL students, the work will be mostly focused on language acquisition, through the lenses both of literature and daily life. For intermediate and advanced ESL students, the work will support their learning in their other required classes, and students will follow the English curriculum for freshmen. Instruction will also incorporate language lab experiences to build fluency and comprehension.


ESL III AND IV – COMPOSITION FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS LEVEL 2: INTRODUCING THE NOVEL (ESS83 & ESS84)
Credits: 1 credit/semester

Length of Course: 2 semesters
Prerequisite: ESL I and II
Requirement Satisfied: Required English

This course is designed to support our bilingual and ESL population. For intermediate and advanced ESL students, the work in this class will support their learning in their other required classes, and students will follow the English curriculum for sophomores. Instruction will also incorporate language lab experiences to build fluency and comprehension. Preparation for taking external examinations, particularly the NYSESLAT, will be incorporated into the work done this year.


ESL V AND VI – LITERATURE AND CURRENT ISSUES (ESS85 & ESS86)
Credits: 1 credit/semester
Grade(s): 11
Length of Course: 2 semesters
Prerequisite: ESL III and IV
Requirement Satisfied: Required English

This course is designed to support our bilingual and ESL population. For intermediate and advanced ESL students, the work in this class will support their learning in their other required classes, and students will follow the English curriculum for juniors. Instruction will also incorporate language lab experiences to build fluency and comprehension. Preparation for external examinations – the comprehensive English Regents, the NYSESLAT, and the SAT/TOEFL – will be intensified in this year.


ESL VII AND VIII – LITERATURE ACROSS CULTURES (ESS87 & ESS88)
Credits: 1 credit/semester
Grade(s): 12
Length of Course: 2 semesters
Prerequisite: ESL V and VI
Requirement Satisfied: Required English

This course is designed to support our bilingual and ESL population. For intermediate and advanced ESL students, the work in this class will support their learning in their other required classes, and students will follow the English curriculum for seniors. Preparation for external examinations where applicable – the comprehensive English Regents, the NYSESLAT, and the SAT/TOEFL – will continue in this year.
