Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here we are, in October already – hard to believe, but true. I hope this letter finds you and your family members well.    We are off to a wonderful start here at MCSM.  We recently held our after-school club fair which was a smash success and very well-attended.  Here are just some of our after-school clubs (The complete list can be found on www.mcsm.net):

    Geek Club      Debate        Photography      Art Therapy   Glee Club/Music Club   Greenhouse Club   GSA  Model United Nations   Muslim Student Assoc.  National Honor Society   Book Club  Astronomy  Shakespeare

If your child is interested in joining any of these clubs, have him or her consult the after school bulletin board between rooms 140A and 140B for times and locations.

The end of the first marking period, October 19th, is fast approaching.  Report cards will be distributed to students on October 26th.

As a reminder, the Parents’ Association generally meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the library. Check the calendar which was previously sent to you or our website, www.mcsm.net, for specific dates of those meetings and other important events. Also mark your calendars for Parent Teacher conferences which will be held the evening of November 9th and the afternoon of November 10th.

Our schoolwide Independent Reading Program is underway and takes place every Monday and Tuesday.  This program is designed to help your child develop a further love of literacy, increase their reading stamina and sustained focus ability.  All of this is necessary for success in college.  All students will be required to participate.  Your child is to bring a book or piece of literature that they desire to read.

We are looking for parents to volunteer to support our programs throughout the school. This includes cafeteria duty, exit monitoring, hallway monitoring, dismissal, graduation, trips etc.  If you’re interested, please contact Parent Coordinator Zaida Santiago at 212 876 4639 X1491 or zsantiago@schools.nyc.gov (cell phone 646-318-7976 ).  Parent engagement is key to a school’s success.  Also, if you ever wish to come to the school to visit a class, please call her to schedule.

Lastly, regarding metrocards – the DOE has been taking longer to replace our supply of metrocards.  Although we wish we had the ability to immediately replace a lost or stolen card, unfortunately we are not always able to do so.  Therefore, we highly recommend ensuring that your child’s metrocard is kept in a safe place and that he or she knows to be extremely careful with it and treat it as the valuable item it is.  Regrettably, it may take several weeks to replace the card.  Again, this is beyond our control and we regret this unfortunate but unavoidable circumstance.
